Charting a Course for Foster Care in Oregon

Executive Director Kendra Jones, along with Judge Valeri Love of the Lane County Circuit Court and Chuck Nyby, Program Manager of Oregon Department of Human Services, go on a live stream with Michael Dunne, hos of KLCC’s Oregon on the Record podcast to discuss Oregon state’s foster care system. Despite a recent decline of children in foster care, nearly 5,000 children remain in foster care across the state, including almost 1,000 in Lane County. Many of these children are placed in hotels, which represents not only an unstable but an unsafe situation who are in the most vulnerable time of their lives.

According to Dunne: “The foster care system in our state can be described as a good news/bad news story. The good news is that the number of kids who have no better alternative than to live with foster parents is down significantly from its high of just a few years ago. The bad news is that there still are thousands of children in our state that need to be removed from families for a host of heartbreaking reasons.”

Dunne discusses the upsides and downsides of the foster care system with Jones, Love, and Nyby in this educational and informative live stream, now recorded for your viewing pleasure.
