Supporting Foster

Care Students

In recognition of the significant challenges faced by children in foster care, CASA of Lane County is committed to providing essential support to empower these young individuals on their educational journey. Our Academic Empowerment Advocates (AEA) program has been designed to make a tangible difference in the lives of foster care students by addressing their unique needs and aspirations.

Research shows children in foster care in Oregon have worse education outcomes than other at-risk youth, including homeless youth. This program, in partnership with the Eugene 4J School District, is an effort to provide additional support and advocacy, ensuring children have the best chance of success in school and for their future.

Program Goals

The primary objective of the Academic Empowerment Advocates program is to enhance the academic success of foster care students. Our mission is to elevate graduation rates, reduce the risk of incarceration and homelessness, and foster a brighter future for these resilient children.

Key Supporting

Components

  • Personal Introduction and Role Explanation: Advocates establish trust and create a safe and secure environment.

  • Academic Monitoring: We closely monitor school attendance, grades, and academic progress, identifying areas where students may need additional support.

  • Communication with School Staff: Regular check-ins with teachers and school staff ensure we stay informed about students’ progress, addressing emerging concerns promptly.

  • Student Meetings: Advocates meet with foster students at least monthly, providing a platform for students to discuss their challenges and receive guidance.

  • Participation in Student Support Meetings: Advocates attend IEP’s and other student support meetings to stay well-informed and advocate for students' best interests.

  • Resource Identification and Coordination: Advocates identify and recommend resources to support school success, and coordinate access to these resources when needed.

By offering these comprehensive services, our AEA’s aim to create a supportive environment where foster students can thrive academically and overcome the obstacles they face.
